Ultrasound Applications - Doppler Flow Phantoms

The Model U-245 tissue equivalent Doppler flow phantom is for the evaluation of diagnostic Doppler ultrasound.

The phantom is used for the assessment of:

  • Sensitivity
  • Volume flow
  • Flow Velocity
  • Flow Location
  • Penetration
  • Image Uniformity
  • Directional Discrimination
  • Flow Visualization
The Model U-245 contains a long lasting tissue equivalent urethane and incorporates two wall-less vessels. An 8 mm diameter vessel, which is positioned horizontally 2 cm below the scanning surface simulating the common carotid artery and a 4 mm vessel angled 45º from the scanning surface.

Carotid Anthropomorphic Vascular Phantoms (SEA Series) - These Doppler phantoms are fabricated with thin walled carotid bifurcation vessels embedded in an agarose/gelatine tissue mimic and encased in an air tight acrylic box with an acoustic window. This product line of geometrically characterized carotid bifurcation phantoms (normal and various stenoses options) offers the added benefit of being compatible with ultrasound, MRI and radiographic imaging modalities making them ideal for multi-modality comparisons.

QATP Doppler flow phantom product line was designed for the assessment of clinical Doppler ultrasound devices. Three models are available to offer the end user the option of agarose (gelatine), urethane or Zerdine™ tissue mimicking materials. These three models possess the same dimensional and geometric configurations, as follows:

QATP Phantom Dimensions

  • Weight: 3.6 kg
  • Size: length: 17 cm, width: 10 cm, height: 21.5 cm

QATP Phantom Vessel Geometry

  • 8 mm horizontal vessel 2 cm deep
  • 4 mm vessel at 45º angle

Each phantom contains two vessels with known vessel geometry. An 8 mm diameter horizontal vessels enables evaluation of velocity and flow measurements. Doppler sensitivity is assessed in a 4 mm diameter vessel on a 45º angle. Tissue equivalent material model options are as follows:

QATP- 100/A Model The two vessels are embedded in an agarose/gelatine tissue mimicking material.

• Speed of sound 1540 m/s ± 10 m/s at 22ºC

• Attenuation coefficient 0.7 dB/cm/MHz @ 5 MHz

QATP - 100/U Model The two vessels are embedded in a urethane tissue mimicking material.

• Speed of sound 1430 m/s ± 10 m/s at 20ºC

• Attenuation coefficient 0.5 dB/cm/MHz ± 0.05 dB/cm/MHz @ 5 MHz

QATP - 100/Z Model The two vessels are embedded in a Zerdine™ tissue mimicking material.

• Speed of sound 1540 m/s ± 6 m/s at 22ºC

• Attenuation coefficient 0.5 dB/cm/MHz or 0.7 dB/cm/MHz

The SMI Doppler flow phantom product line was designed used for the assessment of clinical Doppler ultrasound devices. Three models are available, all using agarose (gelatine) as the tissue mimicking material. These phantoms will be of interest to manufacturers of clinical Doppler ultrasound devices.

SMI 100 Model Two parallel vessels with 4.8 mm and 7.9 mm inner diameters embedded in agarose/gelatine.

C70-ASEA Model Two vessels with inner diameters of 4.8 mm and 0.8 mm, one vessel is parallel to the surface, the other is angulated at 40 degrees embedded in agarose/gelatine.

C70-ASEA Model Three vessels with inner diameters of 3.175 mm, one vessel is parallel to the surface, one is angulated at 25.2 degrees, the other at 31.0 degrees embedded in agarose/gelatine.
